Brilliant Success and Memorable Moments

Who can forget when the song Viva La Vida dominated the music charts and airwaves in 2008? The four members of the band, including Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion, are also famous for their visually stunning live performances.

However, the music of Coldplay may have been shaped by Martin’s experiences growing up abroad, which profoundly influenced their musical style. Martin was born in Exeter, England, but spent a significant part of his childhood in Zimbabwe, southern Africa.

Cultural Origins and Music

Martin’s mother, Alison Martin, is a music teacher from Rhodesia—now modern-day Zimbabwe. Martin has shared that “half of his family” is from this country. In a 2008 interview with Rolling Stone, Martin mentioned the influences of Afro-pop and high-life in the song Strawberry Death from the album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.Glastonbury 2024: The reason Coldplay are the 21st Century's defining band

“My mum comes from Zimbabwe, so I spent a lot of time there. I used to work in [Shed Studios], where people played [Afrobeat],” he said. In a 2017 interview with BBC Radio 1, Martin elaborated on his time in Zimbabwe. Reflecting on Paul Simon’s 1986 hit Graceland, he recalled: “I was 10 years old and living in Zimbabwe, where half my family is from, and this record was playing. I was trying to get the attention of another 10-year-old girl. There was no texting in those days, but she was doing the eighties equivalent of not texting me back, and I remember this song playing and thinking ‘at least the music is awesome.'”

Fan Reactions

Since this revelation spread, fans have quickly shared the information on TikTok. A user named @estduncan posted a video of herself listening to Coldplay’s song Adventure of a Lifetime, writing: “It’s kinda crazy how Coldplay’s lead Chris Martin grew up in Zimbabwe in his teens and worked in a local music studio with Zim guitarists, so Coldplay has African influences in their music.”Chris Martin confirms Coldplay will only make 12 studio albums | The Standard

In the comments section, many fans recognized sungura music in Coldplay’s songs—a popular genre in Zimbabwe known for its upbeat rhythms, fast-paced guitar riffs, and catchy lyrics. One fan commented: “No way. This makes so much sense in terms of that guitar [riff]. Sounds like Sungura music!” While another agreed: “I knew the guitar sounded like Sungura; you can hear it so clearly.”
