A new era of Manchester basketball is set to begin this weekend as Manchester Basketball, the city’s brand-new team, prepares for its first game in the newly formed Super League. Established this summer, Manchester Basketball replaces the Manchester Giants and will play its home games at the National Basketball Performance Centre in Belle Vue.

The new Super League features nine teams, including the Bristol Flyers, Caledonia Gladiators, Cheshire Phoenix, Leicester Riders, London Lions, Newcastle Eagles, Sheffield Sharks, and Surrey 89ers. This league was created after the British Basketball League was stripped of its license in June due to “clear license violations” amid financial concerns.
Manchester Basketball is backed by the Sherwood Family Investment Office based in the United States. The team has recruited several impressive players, including Nathan Cayo, a former CEBL champion and G-League player. This has brought a fresh wave of excitement and hope for the city’s fans, particularly those who were loyal to the Manchester Giants.

Looking Towards the Future
A standout feature of Manchester Basketball is the presence of Callum Jones, the all-time leading scorer in the history of the Manchester Giants. Jones will be leading the new team as head coach, bringing with him 11 years of playing experience and a deep commitment to Manchester basketball.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for me to lead the city’s new team into a new era of British basketball,” Jones shared. “I share the new owners’ vision of building this brand on a sustainable foundation, and I’m thrilled to be part of this journey in coaching the team.”

The arrival of Manchester Basketball promises to reignite the city’s passion for basketball, not just through exciting games but also by forging strong connections with the community. “Our goal is to grow the club in the coming years, reconnect with the community and the city, and elevate basketball across the entire city,” the club emphasized.
First Game and Future Aspirations
Manchester is a city with a strong sporting tradition, and basketball is no exception. Manchester Basketball hopes to become a part of this rich culture and establish itself as an essential fixture. The team’s first game will take place tomorrow against the Caledonia Gladiators, followed by a home opener on Sunday against the Newcastle Eagles.
Expectations are high for Manchester Basketball, as they bring not just a new team but also a new spirit and a renewed hope for fans and the Manchester community.
