Behind the Scenes of Fast & Furious: Where Did the Tension Between Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson Start?
The Fast & Furious franchise, known for its high-octane action and themes of family, has been a box office juggernaut for over two decades. But behind the glossy veneer of fast cars and explosive stunts lies a simmering tension between two of its biggest stars: Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Their feud has captivated fans and media alike, sparking countless headlines, social media posts, and interviews. How did it all begin, and what caused two powerhouse actors to clash so publicly? Let’s dive into the origins and timeline of their rocky relationship.
The Beginning: A New Star in the Fast Lane
The tension reportedly started brewing in 2011 when Dwayne Johnson joined the Fast & Furious franchise in its fifth installment, Fast Five. Portraying Luke Hobbs, a no-nonsense federal agent, Johnson brought a new dynamic to the series, which had, until then, been dominated by Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto. Johnson’s charisma, physicality, and fan base revitalized the franchise, helping Fast Five become a critical and commercial success.
However, behind the scenes, Diesel, who also serves as a producer on the series, allegedly clashed with Johnson over creative decisions and on-set behavior. Diesel, long considered the face of the franchise, may have felt overshadowed by Johnson’s rising popularity within the series.

The Instagram Post That Sparked a Feud
In 2016, while filming The Fate of the Furious (2017), tensions reached a boiling point. Dwayne Johnson took to Instagram to post a cryptic but explosive message, praising his female co-stars but calling out some of his male co-stars as “candy asses.”
“Some conduct themselves as stand-up men and true professionals, while others don’t,” Johnson wrote. “When you watch this movie next April and it seems like I’m not acting in some of these scenes and my blood is legit boiling—you’re right.”

Although Johnson didn’t name names, fans and insiders quickly speculated that the post was directed at Diesel. The internet erupted, and the feud was now public.
What Was the Problem?
Reports from the Fate of the Furious set suggested that Johnson and Diesel had vastly different work styles. Diesel, as a producer, was said to take a more laid-back approach to filming, often arriving late and delaying production. Johnson, a former WWE superstar known for his discipline and professionalism, reportedly found Diesel’s behavior frustrating.
Insiders claimed that the two actors rarely filmed scenes together during The Fate of the Furious, and their relationship had deteriorated to the point where mediators had to step in to keep the peace.
Public Statements and Escalation
The feud didn’t just stay behind closed doors. Both stars began addressing the drama in interviews, often in vague or passive-aggressive terms.
In a 2017 interview with USA Today, Diesel downplayed the conflict, saying, “I think some things may be blown out of proportion. I don’t think the world really realizes how close we are.” He described their relationship as similar to that of brothers, complete with moments of intense disagreement.
Johnson, however, was less conciliatory. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he confirmed the tension, saying, “Vin and I had a few discussions, including an important face-to-face in my trailer. And what I came to realize is that we have a fundamental difference in philosophies on how we approach moviemaking and collaborating.”
Hobbs & Shaw: A Breaking Point
The feud reached its peak in 2019 when Dwayne Johnson starred in Hobbs & Shaw, a Fast & Furious spinoff focused on his character and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw. While the film was a box office success, it sparked controversy within the Fast & Furious family.
Tyrese Gibson, another franchise star and a close ally of Diesel, publicly criticized Johnson for prioritizing the spinoff over the main series. Gibson claimed that Johnson’s decision delayed the production of Fast & Furious 9, further dividing the cast.
Diesel, for his part, remained silent about the spinoff, but the absence of Johnson in F9 (2021) was a clear sign of the growing rift.
Vin Diesel’s Public Plea and Johnson’s Response
In late 2021, Diesel made a surprising move by publicly asking Johnson to return for the franchise’s final installments. In an Instagram post, Diesel referred to Johnson as “my little brother” and urged him to reprise his role as Hobbs.
Johnson, however, was unmoved. In an interview with CNN, he called Diesel’s post “an example of his manipulation” and reiterated that he had no plans to return. “I told him directly that I would not be returning to the franchise. I was firm yet cordial with my words and said that I would always be supportive of the cast and always root for the franchise to be successful, but there was no chance I would return.”
What Does the Future Hold?
As of now, the feud between Diesel and Johnson shows no signs of resolution. Diesel remains committed to steering the Fast & Furious franchise toward its grand finale, while Johnson has moved on to other projects, including his own blockbuster franchises like Jumanji and Black Adam.
Fans, however, continue to hope for a reconciliation, with many speculating that the two stars might eventually bury the hatchet for the sake of the series that brought them together. Whether or not that happens, their feud has already cemented itself as one of the most talked-about rivalries in Hollywood history.
