A Reluctant Start: No Interest, No Confidence

Growing up in Brighton, Colorado, Andi Jackson’s world revolved around sports. She wasn’t the type of child to sit still; instead, she immersed herself in a variety of athletic pursuits. Swimming, tennis, soccer, basketball, futsal, lacrosse, and track were just some of the sports she dabbled in, even excelling in high jump, where she competed in the USATF Junior National Championships. Yet, one sport she had little interest in was volleyball.

At the age of 15, Jackson’s mother, Heidi, drove her to a volleyball tryout at The Diff Volleyball Club, despite Andi’s protests. She was less than enthusiastic, feeling that volleyball was not for her. “I’m not going to be good at it. It’s not my thing,” Andi told her mother, as they drove the long stretch along Highway 85 toward the tryouts. However, Heidi remained persistent, reassuring Andi that there was nothing to lose by giving it a try.

At the tryout, Jackson’s skills were raw. She was still underhand serving, with a beginner’s level of ball control. Despite the rocky start, the coaches at The Diff saw something more than just technical ability: raw athleticism and the potential for growth.

A Leap of Faith: A Hidden Talent Unveiled

Andi’s tryout at The Diff marked the moment when her volleyball career began to take shape. During the jump test, Andi soared impressively off the ground, touching a height of 9 feet 8 inches—an extraordinary leap for a 5-foot-10 freshman. The gym fell silent as onlookers watched in awe. Trisha Kroll, the owner of The Diff, couldn’t believe what she was seeing. “The skill part of it, she just wasn’t that great of a volleyball player. But you could see this amazing athlete,” Kroll recalled. “She knew how to figure out how to win.”

It was this raw athleticism that set Andi apart, a quality that could be nurtured through training. Kroll was quick to offer Andi a spot on the 15s team, recognizing the untapped potential that lay within her.

Coaching and Mentorship: The Key to Growth

Andi’s transformation from a novice volleyball player to a rising star didn’t happen overnight. She dedicated herself to learning the sport, constantly improving her skills. One-on-one lessons with Kroll helped Andi sharpen her technique, but it was the guidance of former Nebraska volleyball star Christina Houghtelling (now Christina Hudson) that truly accelerated her development. Houghtelling recognized Andi’s potential early on and encouraged her to aim for the best volleyball programs in the country, including Nebraska.

The moment Houghtelling reached out to Nebraska head coach John Cook, sending a video of Andi’s training session, marked a turning point in Andi’s career. The video captured her athleticism and raw talent, and Cook’s response was swift: Nebraska wanted to recruit her. Despite the fact that Andi had only been playing volleyball for a short time, the Huskers saw something in her that was worth investing in.

“When Christina sent me that video, I was like, ‘Wow, this kid could be something,’” Cook said. The fact that Nebraska offered Andi a full scholarship without ever seeing her play in person was a rare and significant move, one that would propel Andi into the national spotlight.

A Steady Rise: From Local Talent to National Phenomenon

By the time Andi was 16, she had already committed to Nebraska, and her reputation had spread far beyond The Diff. Her athleticism was undeniable, and her volleyball skills continued to improve at an astonishing rate. As she grew in confidence, Andi began to thrive in national competitions. She earned a spot on the U-19 United States Junior National Team and soon found herself climbing the national recruiting rankings. By the time she graduated from high school, Andi was ranked the number one middle blocker in the country and the sixth-best recruit in the class of 2023.

As a freshman at Nebraska, Andi quickly earned a starting position as a middle blocker, a role in which she excelled. She was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team and the Big Ten Freshman Team, making an immediate impact at the collegiate level. Her hitting percentage was one of the best in the nation, and her jump touch had risen to an impressive 10 feet 9 inches—a mark that ranked her among the best in the history of Nebraska volleyball.

The Humble Athlete: Focused on the Team, Not the Spotlight

Despite her rapid rise in the volleyball world, Andi remains humble and focused on her team. She has always been more interested in making a positive impact on those around her than in seeking personal recognition. Her loyalty to her club, The Diff, where she spent the entirety of her youth volleyball career, speaks volumes about her character. Unlike many athletes who move to larger clubs to gain exposure, Andi stayed loyal to The Diff, refusing to let external pressure influence her decisions.

This humility extends beyond her volleyball career. Andi’s relationship with her teammates and mentors has been a source of strength throughout her journey. She has always been quick to lend a helping hand, whether it’s supporting a teammate through a personal struggle or offering assistance with tasks that others might avoid. This selflessness and kindness have earned her the respect and admiration of everyone she encounters.

Overcoming Doubts: A Champion’s Mindset

While Andi has achieved great success, her journey has not been without doubts. Throughout her career, she has grappled with moments of self-doubt, questioning her abilities and fearing that her rapid rise might be a fluke. But, as she continues to prove herself on the court, these insecurities have lessened, replaced by a growing belief in her own potential.
