In a conversation on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter Podcast on November 25, Selena shared her experience of filming Wizards of Waverly Place. She recalled how every Friday night they filmed in front of a live audience, which was one of the most exhilarating experiences she had. Making a child laugh uncontrollably due to their pure joy was one of the most rewarding feelings for her.
“We would film Wizards in front of a live audience every Friday night, and that was one of the biggest highs I could ever get. It was amazing to make a kid laugh uncontrollably because it’s pure,” Selena shared.

Selena also shared that she had often been mistaken for Alex Russo, especially when kids would approach her, knowing her solely as the character Alex. Some even asked her, “Where’s your wand?” as though she were still the character in their eyes.
“I’ve had kids come up to me, and they only know me as Alex. And they’ll have full conversations like, ‘Where’s your wand?’” Selena laughed as she recalled.
This moment, she said, was one she would never forget. It made her realize the significant influence she had on the lives of the viewers, especially the children. It was a feeling of immense pride and joy that she had contributed to their beautiful memories.
Returning as Alex Russo in ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’
After a long hiatus, Selena Gomez returned to play Alex Russo in the new spin-off series Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. Not only did she reprise her beloved role, but she also took on the role of an executive producer for the series, alongside her TV brother David Henrie, who played Justin Russo.
In September, David Henrie expressed his excitement about working with Selena again. He shared with PEOPLE: “It was a dream come true. We’ve stayed in touch and remained good friends, and working together again was amazing.”
At the premiere event for Wizards Beyond Waverly Place in October, Selena opened up about the evolution of her character Alex Russo. She felt that both she and David Henrie had grown significantly since the original series and that the relationship between the characters had also developed in a natural way.
Selena Gomez on Alex Russo’s Growth
Selena stated that she felt their return to their roles as Alex and Justin was wonderful. She believed the show picked up where they left off and highlighted how Alex and Justin had evolved and changed over time.
“We kind of picked up where we left off, and it shows a very established Justin and Alex. You’re still curious about what they’re going through, but it felt like a rhythm we got back into,” Selena said.
Though she has become a global star with a diverse career in music, acting, and producing, Selena Gomez never forgets the memories and experiences from her role as Alex Russo. She considers this role as a significant milestone in her career and the beginning of her journey to becoming a beloved figure in the entertainment industry.
The collaboration between Selena Gomez and David Henrie in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is a testament to their enduring friendship and marks another chapter in Selena’s journey with a character that remains dear to her fans.
