From Underdogs to Contenders: How Daemen Wildcats Are Shaking Up Division II Basketball

The Daemen University Wildcats are enjoying a historic season in NCAA Division II men’s basketball, one that has captured the attention of the national basketball community. With a perfect 11-0 record and an average victory margin of 22.6 points, the Wildcats have risen to No. 3 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches rankings, a feat that highlights the team’s extraordinary journey under head coach Mike MacDonald.Women's Basketball - Daemen University Athletics

Daemen’s early success has sparked dreams of a deep postseason run, fueled by a strong sense of unity among the players, suffocating defensive prowess, and an efficient offensive system that exemplifies teamwork. This marks the Wildcats as a serious contender in the pursuit of their first NCAA championship.

Defying Expectations with a United Team

Heading into the season, Coach MacDonald admitted he had high hopes for his squad but couldn’t have predicted the dominance they’ve displayed. Losing their leading scorer and two other key players to transfers, Daemen faced a daunting schedule featuring six teams that made the NCAA Division II tournament last year. Yet, the Wildcats not only rose to the challenge but thrived.

Junior guard Justin Glover, one of the team’s key contributors, credits their success to the off-court bond they’ve cultivated. “This is the most connected we’ve been as a team in the three years I’ve been here,” Glover said. “That bond is why we’re playing so well on the court.”

Glover’s words echo the sentiments of a team built on unselfish play. The Wildcats have seven players averaging over 7.5 points per game, with 6-foot-10 center Ben Bill leading the pack at 16.7 points per game. Their offensive system is predicated on ball movement and selflessness, evidenced by their 51% shooting and a remarkable 60% of baskets coming off assists.Women's Basketball - Daemen University Athletics

Defense Wins Championships

While Daemen’s offense has been effective, their defense has been downright stifling. They lead the nation in opponent field goal percentage, holding teams to just 36% shooting, and rank fourth in scoring defense, allowing only 60.1 points per game. Nine of their 12 opponents this season, including Division I University at Buffalo, have been held to 61 points or fewer.

“We’ve got a group of guys who are really happy to be here, they really like each other, and they are connected,” MacDonald said. “It’s always a different lineup that makes the big run, but we always have five guys on the floor who are connected on both offense and defense.”

This defensive consistency has been instrumental in Daemen’s ascent up the national rankings. The Road Ahead: Challenges and Aspirations

Daemen’s rise to No. 3 in the national rankings comes with its own set of challenges. As one of just five unbeaten teams remaining in Division II, the Wildcats are embracing the pressure to maintain their perfect record. “Let’s keep winning and be the last one standing,” MacDonald said. At the same time, he remains realistic, acknowledging the possibility of an eventual loss. “And that’ll be OK. We’ll lace up our sneakers the next day and go play.”

The Wildcats’ climb to the top of the East Region rankings further underscores their remarkable season. For the first time, Daemen is in position to host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament at their home gym, Lumsden Gymnasium. Achieving this milestone would not only be a testament to their hard work but also provide a significant advantage as they pursue their ultimate goal.

Building a Legacy for the Underdogs

Daemen’s success story is even more inspiring considering the challenges they face as a smaller program. With limited scholarships and resources compared to national powerhouses, the Wildcats are a shining example of what can be accomplished through teamwork, determination, and effective leadership.Women's basketball beats Daemen 82-38 in preseason exhibition - The Spectrum

“We’re hoping this is another step in the progression of our program,” MacDonald said. “We do what we do. As long as we can keep being us, the other stuff will take care of itself.”

The players share their coach’s vision. Justin Glover emphasized the importance of staying focused on their immediate goals. “We are a humble team,” he said. “We’re taking it one game at a time. Keep coming together, keep working hard every day to reach the ultimate goal. But we want to win the conference and host. Then hopefully, go win a national championship.”

Conclusion

As the Daemen Wildcats continue their unbeaten journey, they represent more than just a basketball team. They are a symbol of perseverance and unity, proving that a connected and determined group can compete with the best. With each game, Daemen solidifies its place among the elite programs in Division II and inspires hope that the underdog can rise to the top.

The path ahead is challenging, but this team has already shown that it is prepared to defy expectations. As the Wildcats set their sights on a conference championship and beyond, basketball fans everywhere are watching and rooting for this Cinderella story to continue.
