In a thrilling display of resilience and determination, the East Syracuse Minoa (ESM) girls volleyball team extended their winning streak to five games, overcoming a week-long hiatus to defeat the Tully Black Knights in a nail-biting 3-2 contest. The match, held on Thursday, demonstrated the Spartans’ grit and commitment as they battled their way to victory in a dramatic five-set showdown that had fans on the edge of their seats.

The Challenge of the Hiatus
For ESM, the game against Tully came after a week-long break, a period that left both the players and coaches wondering how the hiatus would impact their performance. “Not having a game for over a week is tough,” said ESM head coach Jake Cline. “I think both sides just really wanted to show that they got better after the break. I think everybody played well and that’s why it went to five sets.”

The absence of match play could have affected the Spartans’ rhythm, but ESM showed no signs of rust. Instead, they came out with a level of intensity that suggested they had been training hard and staying focused during the downtime. This proved to be critical as the game went to five sets, with both teams trading victories and momentum throughout.
A Back-and-Forth Battle
The match unfolded in a back-and-forth manner that kept spectators on their toes. ESM won the first and third sets in tight contests, with both teams battling fiercely for every point. The first set was a closely contested affair, with the Spartans emerging victorious. In the third set, ESM once again found themselves in a tight battle but held their composure to secure a crucial 25-23 win.
However, Tully was not to be outdone. The Black Knights answered back in the second set, dominating with a 25-14 victory. Tully’s performance in the second set showcased their powerful offensive attack and sharp defensive play, leaving little room for ESM to make a run.

As the match progressed into the fourth set, tensions rose. Tully managed to build a significant lead early on, pushing ESM to the brink. Yet, the Spartans refused to back down. They fought back from a five or six-point deficit, showing incredible resilience and determination. As the set drew to a close, ESM even had two chances to seize set point. However, Tully managed to cling on and ultimately secured a hard-fought 29-27 win, giving them the advantage heading into the decisive fifth set.
Coach Cline reflected on the momentum shift following the fourth set: “We were actually down five or six points in that fourth set, so for us to be in it at the end and give ourselves a chance for set point twice was actually big. It obviously didn’t go our way, but I think that momentum helped us in the fifth set.”
Spartans Surge in the Final Set
As the match entered the fifth and final set, the Spartans came out with renewed energy and focus. ESM dominated the early stages of the set, quickly jumping out to an 8-0 lead. Tully, though not backing down, struggled to break through the ESM defense and offensive efficiency. The Spartans’ early dominance left the Black Knights scrambling to catch up, and they found themselves down by several points.
Tully did manage to mount a late rally, but the momentum built by ESM in the opening points of the final set proved too much to overcome. The Spartans withstood the Black Knights’ push and held on for a 15-9 victory in the final set, clinching the match and securing their fifth consecutive win.
Standout Performances
Several players stood out in the contest, with key contributions from both veterans and emerging stars. ESM setter Kristina Levkovich had a career-defining performance, registering a career-high 47 assists. Levkovich’s ability to control the tempo of the game and create opportunities for her teammates was instrumental in the Spartans’ success. Her precision and vision on the court helped facilitate an offense that was both dynamic and difficult for Tully to stop.
Outside hitter Katelyn Davis was another standout player, leading the team with 21 kills, in addition to contributing 12 digs. Davis’ offensive output was crucial in the tight sets, and her ability to score points in critical moments made her a key asset in the match. Davis’ energy and determination were palpable throughout the match, especially when the Spartans needed a big play.
Madyson Broome also had a memorable performance, stepping in as libero to replace an injured teammate. Broome’s defensive work was exceptional, as she collected 35 digs, anchoring the Spartans’ backcourt and helping to thwart Tully’s offensive attacks. Her tenacity and quick reflexes were on full display as she kept the Spartans in the game during key moments.
A Team Built on Belief and Hard Work
The win marked a continuation of ESM’s impressive comeback after a tough 1-2 start to the season. The Spartans have now won five straight matches, including two dramatic five-set victories. This streak has been a testament to the team’s growth, resilience, and belief in one another.
“We’re all very happy,” said Coach Cline. “We’re putting in the work and it’s showing. I think we believe in ourselves.” His words reflect the collective confidence that the team has built as they continue to perform at a high level. This recent run of form has allowed the Spartans to climb to a 6-2 record, positioning them as a formidable force in their league.
Looking ahead, ESM will aim to continue their streak when they face Central Valley Academy at home on Monday. With their momentum and confidence soaring, the Spartans will look to keep building on their success and maintain their position as one of the top teams in the area.
Tully’s Tough Loss and What’s Next
For Tully, the loss dropped their record to 5-3 and extended their current losing streak to two games. Despite the defeat, the Black Knights showed moments of brilliance throughout the match and will look to bounce back in their next contest. Tully will have an opportunity to end their skid with a matchup against Camden on Friday. Coach Cline acknowledged the strength of their opponents: “Tully is a tough team, and they’re going to come back stronger. But I think we showed a lot of heart and determination tonight.”
As the season progresses, both ESM and Tully will continue to develop and fine-tune their teams, knowing that every match is an opportunity to improve and get one step closer to their goals.
In the end, the thrilling 3-2 victory was a testament to the power of resilience, teamwork, and the relentless pursuit of improvement. The Spartans have proven that, even after a break, they are ready for whatever challenges lie ahead.
