Sitting in a makeshift studio beneath Sydney’s Accor Stadium, Buckland discusses the band’s creative process while on the road. “We knew this tour would be long, so we’ve kept creative,” he shares, describing how the band transforms temporary spaces into hubs for musical experimentation. Though they lack a drum kit, these studios help the group stay connected, especially as the members now live in different parts of the world.Coldplay Guitarist Jonny Buckland on Band's Future

Creative Evolution and Confidence

Reflecting on their latest album Moon Music, Buckland explains how the band’s approach has evolved. “When we started, we’d spend every minute together in the studio, sometimes burning out. Now, we focus more, working smarter instead of harder.” This shift in mindset has also brought newfound confidence. “This tour feels different. We’ve let go of worrying about being cool or looking good—it’s about making sure people have a great time.”

Buckland credits this change to a long hiatus from touring between 2016 and 2021. “After Everyday Life, we didn’t tour, which gave us space to rediscover our love for music and experimentation.”

When asked about career highlights, Buckland recalls their 2002 Glastonbury headline performance as a defining moment. “It was extraordinary, but honestly, every time we’ve returned, it’s felt just as magical.” He also cherishes unique experiences like playing atop a hillside in Jordan to debut Everyday Life.

However, not all moments have been triumphant. Buckland cites the grueling 12-week U.S. tour for X&Y as a low point. “We were miserable, confused, and almost fell apart as a band.” The aftermath led to significant changes, including the establishment of their own studio, The Bakery, which rejuvenated their creativity.

As Coldplay approaches the end of their planned 12-album discography, Buckland admits he hasn’t fully processed the idea. “Chris [Martin] announced it a couple of albums ago, and it felt so far away. Now, the hill ahead is big, and I can’t see the land beyond.” While the final albums may take years to complete, Buckland embraces the uncertainty. “I love Chris’ idea of ending on something intimate, but until we do it, we won’t know how it feels.”

Balancing Life and Legacy

Despite Coldplay’s global fame, Buckland maintains a grounded lifestyle offstage. “At home, I’m just a dad, walking the dog and driving my kids around.” On tour, he focuses on staying mentally and physically healthy by meditating and exploring local surroundings. There are curious, arty diversions tucked amongst those soaring stadium anthems.” Every Coldplay album ranked from worst to best | Louder

As the band continues to break records and redefine live music experiences, Buckland’s reflections reveal a band at peace with their legacy yet eager to keep creating. “It’s not about us anymore—it’s about the people coming to the shows. If they’re having a good time, we’ve done our job.”

Coldplay’s journey is far from over, but as they approach their final chapter, they remain as innovative and connected as ever. For fans, the end may feel bittersweet, but for Buckland and his bandmates, it’s just another step in a remarkable story.
