Taylor Swift, one of the world’s biggest music stars, is not only known for her songs but also for inspiring unique creative projects worldwide. In her song “Sweet Nothings”, she mentions “Wicklow in July” and wonders if the pebble she once took from a Wicklow beach “misses its home.” This seemingly small story sparked curiosity and creativity among three students from Loreto Bray.

From Pebble to Big Idea
High school students Abigail Devine, Kayna Kennedy, and Judith Joby decided to turn the pebble’s tale into an art project called “The Pebble People” as part of their Transition Year program. Over the summer, they visited beaches across Wicklow to collect pebbles, aiming to recreate the journey of the stone Taylor Swift referenced in her song.
These pebbles were used to craft a unique framed artwork inspired by Taylor’s lyrics. Each stone in the frame represents not just a piece of nature but also the beauty and creativity of Wicklow, Ireland’s “Garden of Ireland.”

Art and Recognition
Visitwicklow.ie, an organization promoting local tourism, commissioned the students to create a special version of the artwork to celebrate Taylor Swift’s return to Ireland. The frame not only highlights the students’ creativity but also symbolizes the deep connection to Wicklow’s natural beauty.
Although the gift has not reached Taylor Swift, the “Wicklow Pebble Frame” is currently on public display at Bray Library on Eglinton Road, offering visitors a chance to admire this unique piece of art.

Significance of the Artwork
Cllr Paul O’Brien, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, remarked: “This frame is not just a piece of art but also a testament to the diverse coastline of Wicklow. It encourages visitors to use the ‘Wicklow Passport’ to explore the towns and villages throughout the area.”
Cllr Dermot O’Brien, representing Bray Municipal District, praised the project, stating: “We are extremely thankful to the Loreto Bray students for their creativity and skill. This frame is not only visually stunning but also showcases the innovative spirit of our younger generation.”
Future of the “Wicklow Pebble Frame”
The frame will remain on display at Bray Library for the next few weeks. Discussions are ongoing to organize a “traveling exhibit,” bringing the artwork to other libraries in Wicklow to share this unique story with a broader audience.
Emer O’Gorman, Chief Executive of Wicklow County Council, expressed her gratitude: “This is a very imaginative initiative that raises awareness about the Wicklow coastline and encourages local exploration through the Wicklow Passport.”
An Inspirational Tale
What began as a lyric in Taylor Swift’s song has transformed into a symbol of creativity and connection to nature in Wicklow. This project not only allowed three students to develop their artistic talents but also highlighted the value of local heritage. It’s a testament to how something as small as a pebble can inspire significant and meaningful stories.
