A Long-Awaited Return

Scotus Central Catholic will make its 32nd appearance in the NSAA State Volleyball Championship this Wednesday, November 8, at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln. The team earned its spot after an impressive comeback against Ogallala in the district final, where they executed a reverse sweep to secure their place among the top eight teams in the state.

This return is especially significant for the Shamrocks, who dominated the state scene for decades, earning their last championship title in 2015. “To finally be back at this level means a lot, not just for the team but for the whole school and community,” Coach Tooley emphasized. The hard work and resilience demonstrated by the players have not gone unnoticed, and the excitement within the team is palpable as they prepare for this pivotal match.

A Tradition of Excellence

Scotus volleyball boasts a remarkable history, having qualified for every state tournament from 1989 to 2006 and again from 2008 to 2015. During this period, the Shamrocks established themselves as a powerhouse, with a tradition of excellence that has set high expectations for every incoming team.

Coach Tooley, who has been a vital part of this program since its inception, reflects on the journey back to state. “There’s always been a lot of pressure to be a part of Scotus volleyball. We set a tradition decades ago, and that will never be matched again. But this team has the heart and determination to carry that legacy forward,” she stated. The pressure to uphold the program’s storied history is immense, yet it also serves as motivation for the current players.

Building Chemistry and Trust

The camaraderie among the players is evident both on and off the court, a factor that has contributed significantly to their performance. Junior Sophia Langan, who has rebounded from injuries, highlights the importance of their teamwork. “On and off the court, we’re best friends. When we’re back there together, we just really trust each other,” Langan expressed. This deep bond fosters an environment where players feel comfortable supporting one another, both during training and in matches.

This season, the Shamrocks have displayed an impressive defensive effort, with several players contributing to the back row. Kayla Hoffman, in her first year as the libero, has been a standout with a team-high 554 digs. Her defensive skills have proven crucial in tight matches, allowing Scotus to maintain momentum and transition effectively into offense.

Overcoming Adversity

One of the defining characteristics of this year’s Scotus team has been their ability to overcome adversity. Senior Meah Sackett shared that the team has faced several challenges throughout the season, including injuries and lineup changes. “We’ve had to adapt quickly, and I think that speaks to our depth and our ability to rise to the occasion,” Sackett remarked. The willingness of players to step into different roles has created a strong sense of unity and resilience.

Sackett’s role as a setter has been critical in orchestrating the team’s offense. With 740 assists under her belt, she has effectively directed the play and established rhythm among the hitters. “Continuity in setting has been huge for us. It allows me to get in a groove and helps the hitters understand where they need to be,” she explained. Her leadership on the court has been instrumental in guiding the team through challenging moments.

Keys to Success: Serving and Strategy

One of the standout elements of the Scotus team this season has been their serving. With a 92.6% serve percentage, they have effectively disrupted opposing teams’ rhythms, preventing them from establishing their game plans. Brooke Krienke, who has embraced her new role as an outside back, emphasized the importance of strong serves. “Services is definitely one of our strengths because it gets the other team out of rotation, which is vital to our strategy,” she noted.

Krienke has not only contributed significantly to the serving game but also achieved personal milestones, including reaching 300 digs this season. Her dedication to improving her skills and understanding the game has made her an invaluable asset to the Shamrocks.

Game Preparation and Strategy

As the team gears up for the state tournament, Coach Tooley has focused on refining their strategies to counter the strengths of their opponents. “We know that Wahoo has a very skilled team, and we can’t just rely on our physical abilities. We’ll need to outsmart them on the court,” she advised. The scouting report indicates that Wahoo possesses a strong offensive lineup, making it crucial for Scotus to implement effective defensive tactics.

The Shamrocks face a formidable opponent in the quarterfinals: the Wahoo Warriors, who enter the match with a 25-7 record. The Warriors are led by three senior attackers with over 250 kills, posing a significant challenge for Scotus. Coach Tooley is aware of the obstacles ahead, recognizing that while they may not be able to outhit Wahoo, strategic play will be essential.

“Looking at their scouting report, their setter is their smallest girl out there and she’s 5-9. That’s basically where we’re at. If we can pass and receive well, we may be able to slow them down a little bit with block touches. It’s going to be a challenge, but we are ready,” Tooley emphasized.

Embracing the Moment

As the Scotus team prepares for their state tournament match against Wahoo, the excitement is palpable. Senior Annie Weber expressed her enthusiasm for the opportunity to compete on such a prestigious stage. “It’s just so awesome. Actually, coach Cassie Anderson told us as freshmen that she thought we were going to go to the state tournament as seniors, and look, we’re here!” Weber exclaimed.
