In our imagination, the dwelling of a British rock luminary in downtown Manhattan might evoke visions of vintage guitars, scattered bottles, and perhaps the lingering scent of clove cigarettes. However, the reality behind Coldplay’s lead guitarist Jonny Buckland presents a vastly different picture—one of elegance, minimalism, and a warm family life.

A Home in a Prime Location
Jonny and Chloe Buckland’s apartment is located in a 19th-century Romanesque Revival building near the heart of Greenwich Village. While the minimalist design radiates warmth and tranquility, this apartment serves as their U.S. base, witnessing frequent family visits that offer a respite from their busy life in Belsize Park, London.
Thoughtful and Modern Design
Collaborating with Ashe Leandro, led by Ariel Ashe and Reinaldo Leandro, the Bucklands aimed for a design that reflects their youthful urban sensibilities. The team skillfully crafted an aesthetic that matched the couple’s taste—a blend of masculine undertones, sharp angles, and modernity. This design language embodies the Bucklands’ refined yet comfortable living.
The living room features vintage French club chairs opposite a B&B Italia sofa and a Billy Cotton coffee table. A side table from Design Within Reach, a custom bookshelf, and a drawing by Dave Muller complete the living space.

Revitalizing Historical Charm
Upon acquisition, the apartment lacked vibrancy and had lost its historical charm. Ashe Leandro breathed new life into this 2,100-square-foot, two-bedroom space. The once-dull interiors now boast striking matte black accents, reclaimed antique herringbone floors, and a blend of sturdy woods, fostering a timeless yet contemporary ambiance.
A Stunning Kitchen
The kitchen showcases custom-designed cabinets and hood, with barstools from Lawson-Fenning upholstered in Edelman leather. The space is adorned with penny tiles from Ann Sacks. The bold statement lies in the use of matte black, applied to shelves, cabinets, and even the claw-foot bathtub. This striking contrast against the white spaces and large windows balances any potential gloominess, seamlessly merging the Bucklands’ refined taste with downtown Manhattan’s raw essence.
The kitchen features a custom-made island and soapstone countertops. The oven is from La Cornue, the sink from Barclay, and the sconces are from Bestlite.

A Beautifully Functional Space
The fusion of mahogany butcher block islands and antique wood slabs enhances the apartment’s appeal. Accentuated by Dave Muller’s artwork and a kitchen backsplash adorned with white penny tiles, the interiors achieve a perfect balance between dark palettes and luminous grace.
In the dining area, the table, bench, and credenza are crafted by BDDW, complemented by vintage chairs from Roland Rainer. The hanging light fixture is from Billy Cotton, and the curtains are made of linen from Ralph Lauren Home.
Comfort Over Opulence
The Bucklands’ preference for clean lines and non-conformity is evident in every design choice. Their home embodies comfort rather than opulence, reflected in their furniture selections and a dedicated playroom for their children cleverly integrated into the layout.
In the primary bedroom, the BDDW bed is adorned with linens from Ralph Lauren Home and a pillow wrapped in a vintage grain sack. Eames chairs, a painting by Thilo Heinzmann, and walls painted in Farrow & Ball Modern Emulsion in Down Pipe complete the room.
Prioritizing Comfort and Usability
Deviating from ostentation, the Bucklands prioritize a home that resonates with comfort and usability, not extravagance. Their lifestyle focuses on authenticity, comfort, and an unmistakable aura of coolness that transcends material indulgence.
The primary bathroom features a Waterworks tub, fittings, and tiles, complemented by a vintage light fixture from JF Chen.
A Unique Rockstar Abode
Jonny Buckland’s Manhattan abode isn’t just a space; it’s an emblem of the unexpected, marrying rockstar aspirations with the warmth of familial living and the sophistication of urban tranquility.
