Music Will Still Focus on Important Themes

Healy, 35, explained, “I naturally make melodically quite relatable music. So, my next record will, hopefully, be an enjoyable 1975 record, objectively. And it will be about what my records are always about — love, sex, death, communication, all the big things.”

The 1975, which includes George Daniel, Adam Hann, and Ross MacDonald, is currently working on their next album after releasing Being Funny in a Foreign Language in 2022. Healy revealed that the new album would be inspired by his near “insanity,” largely caused by excessive interaction with the internet.

Healy added, “The new record is, I suppose, born from me nearly going insane, and that being a kind of internet-induced insanity.”

The Relationship with Taylor Swift and Its Impact on His Personal Life

Matty Healy’s personal life came under intense scrutiny last year when he was romantically linked with Taylor Swift. The two were spotted together in May 2023, just a month after news broke of Swift’s split from her long-time boyfriend, Joe Alwyn. Although Healy and Swift’s relationship was short-lived, it garnered significant attention from both fans and the media, especially given Healy’s controversial past.

The relationship faced even more scrutiny when Healy’s past controversial remarks about rapper Ice Spice, made during a February 2023 podcast, resurfaced. In the podcast, Healy and the hosts mocked Chinese and Hawaiian accents, and Healy referenced the porn website “Ghetto Gaggers,” known for its racially offensive content. Following public outrage, Healy issued a public apology to Ice Spice.

However, by June 2023, sources confirmed that Healy and Swift had officially parted ways. One insider revealed, “They had fun together, but it was never serious.”

No More Personal Romance in Music

Despite the media frenzy surrounding his brief romance with Taylor Swift, Matty Healy made it clear that he has no intention of writing songs about his personal romantic experiences. In the interview, Healy emphasized that he wants to focus on larger themes in his music and avoid reflecting too much on his personal relationships.

Healy explained, “I used to write a lot about relationships, but now I feel more inclined to reflect on my experiences as a person, as an artist, rather than writing about romantic relationships. If I made a record about all the stuff that was said about me or my casual romantic liaisons, I think that’s an obvious thing to draw from, but I’m just not interested in it.”

He continued, “The idea of making a record about something that personally happened to me, and by the time I put it out, it’s going to be two years old — I see people doing that, and it’s just not interesting to me. I’d rather create interesting, artistic music.”

Future Plans

Matty Healy has long been known not only for his music but also for his off-stage controversies. However, with The 1975’s upcoming album, Healy wants to completely separate his personal life from his artistic output. He believes that continuing to mine past relationships for musical inspiration is no longer relevant to him.

Healy shared, “I’m sure there will be some love songs on the album, but I’m not in the world of, ‘Did you see what happened? Here’s my version of it.’ That’s for other artists.”

Taylor Swift’s Influence and Conclusion

While Taylor Swift has not publicly addressed her brief relationship with Matty Healy, many believe that songs from her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, may have been inspired by him. Tracks like The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, Fresh Out the Slammer, and the title track led to speculation about their connection to Healy.

Healy acknowledged that his relationship with Taylor Swift made him more famous, but that’s not something he wants to focus on in his music. For him, art and music should revolve around bigger themes, not personal controversies or private romances.
