With less than two weeks remaining before the 2024-25 college basketball season officially begins, an unexpected change has occurred in Alabama’s schedule. The University of Alabama men’s basketball team, led by coach Nate Oats, is preparing for an ambitious season with hopes of winning at least four titles. One major opportunity was the Players Era event. However, the much-anticipated game between Alabama and Notre Dame, originally scheduled for November 30, 2024, has officially been canceled.

Cancellation of the Notre Dame Game
The clash between Alabama and Notre Dame, set for November 30 at 12 p.m. CST during the Players Era event, has been removed from the schedule. This was set to be the first meeting between the two teams since the memorable game in the 2022 NCAA Tournament when Notre Dame upset Alabama, the sixth seed, in the first round.
This cancellation marks a significant change in the plans for the Players Era event, which initially featured a traditional knockout tournament with championship-deciding matches between top teams. Instead of the Alabama vs. Notre Dame game, the schedule has been reshuffled with notable changes affecting the tournament format.
The Reason Behind the Decision
According to sources, the decision to cancel the game stems from the restructuring of the Players Era event format. The organizers revamped the tournament, splitting the participating teams into two major groups, named the Power group and the Impact group. Alabama, alongside Houston, Notre Dame, and Rutgers, was placed in the Impact group, while the Power group includes teams like Creighton, Oregon, San Diego State, and Texas A&M.

This restructuring led to the removal of some direct matchups, and only games between teams within the same group will now be held. This means Alabama will still face Houston on November 26 and Rutgers on November 27 as originally scheduled, but the game against Notre Dame has been removed from the schedule.
The New Format of Players Era
Under the new format, teams will compete in group-stage games, and based on the results, they will be seeded for further matchups. The teams will compete for a spot in the championship game, with a prize of up to $9 million for the winner, a new element compared to the previous format.
Subsequent games will be determined based on the results of the first two days, with three games for seventh, fifth, and third place held on November 30, prior to the championship game that evening. This opens up opportunities for teams like Alabama to play in other placement matches if they don’t make the final.
