On October 1, Drake, co-founder of OVO, decided to cut ties with several artists in the industry. This “cleaning house” started when fans noticed he unfollowed many notable rappers and celebrities on Instagram, despite their seemingly good relationships. However, some may have mocked or shown disrespect to Drake, prompting his actions.

One of the most prominent names removed was LeBron James. The NBA legend had attended Kendrick Lamar’s “Pop Out” show on Juneteenth and was caught on video admitting how much he liked the diss track “Not Like Us” – a song aimed at Drake. This seemed to be the final straw, leading Drake to drop James from his friends list. Kendrick Lamar was also cut, a move that makes sense to many considering the previous tensions between the two rappers.
Others who were unfollowed included Metro Boomin, Joe Budden, DeMar DeRozan, and Playboi Carti. The conflict began when Metro Boomin sparked the feud with the track “Like That.” DeRozan danced on stage at the “Pop Out” show and made a cameo in the “Not Like Us” video. Meanwhile, Joe Budden has long been a vocal critic of Drake, so his removal wasn’t too surprising.
What puzzled fans the most was Playboi Carti being cut from Drake’s circle. The two artists had worked together multiple times, including on the song “No Face.” However, Carti was removed from the official version released on streaming platforms. The reason could be due to Carti recently mocking Adin Ross, a streamer with a close bond to Drake, or his recent collaboration with The Weeknd, who has been Drake’s rival for the past decade.

Despite many big names being “unfollowed,” one notable figure remained – Future. Even though he participated in the track “Like That,” Future is still being followed by Drake. Although the two artists have had their ups and downs, particularly after Drake admitted in the song “Family Matters” that he was hurt by their falling out (“Pluto sh*t makes me sick, but we’ve never really been through it”), Drake hinted that outside influences strained their friendship. However, Drake’s decision to continue following Future suggests hope for reconciliation in the future.
