The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after an independent court of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) ruled to clear world No. 1 tennis player Jannik Sinner of wrongdoing following his positive test for the banned substance Clostebol, an anabolic steroid, in March 2024.

The Testing Process and ITIA’s Initial Decision
Sinner, now 23, avoided suspension since August 2024 when ITIA announced that he was not at fault despite testing positive for Clostebol. ITIA stated that Sinner’s samples, taken at the Indian Wells tournament in March 2024, showed low concentrations of the substance. Two separate samples taken eight days apart both tested positive.
In a statement on social media in August, Sinner explained that the positive test was the result of “accidental contamination” during treatment by his physiotherapist with an over-the-counter spray containing Clostebol. The spray was used to treat a minor injury on the physiotherapist’s own body, not Sinner’s.
According to Sinner, his fitness coach purchased the spray from a pharmacy in Italy and gave it to his physiotherapist to treat a cut on the physiotherapist’s finger. The physiotherapist unknowingly contaminated Sinner with Clostebol by handling his skin without gloves, leading to the positive test.

WADA Appeals ITIA’s Decision
The independent tribunal, convened by ITIA, accepted Sinner’s explanation and allowed him to successfully appeal the temporary suspension that was imposed after each positive test. However, on September 28, WADA announced that they disagreed with ITIA’s decision, stating that the ruling was “not in line with the current regulations.” WADA is now seeking a one- to two-year suspension for Sinner.
WADA also stated that they are not seeking to nullify any of Sinner’s competition results, except for the decision by ITIA to strip his prize money and ranking points from the Indian Wells tournament, where he reached the semifinals.

Following WADA’s appeal, Sinner expressed his disappointment and surprise. He told reporters, “We went through three hearings, and all three were very positive for me. So, honestly, I am quite surprised by this appeal.”

Sinner also revealed that he had taken steps to address the situation by parting ways with his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi, and fitness coach, Umberto Ferrara, shortly before the US Open in August. This move was aimed at preventing similar incidents and safeguarding his career.
